Biography for Nigel R Winn

Nigel’s interest in wildlife and nature was first kindled among the fells surrounding his family home at Sedbergh in the Yorkshire Dales national park. He later went on to become secretary of the Schools famous Ornithological Society which had kept records of breeding raptors in the area for an unbroken period of over one hundred years.
After going on to study Zoology at University College Cardiff he surprisingly spent the next fifteen years setting up and managing his own construction company eventually selling up and “opting out” in 2001 to spend eighteen months travelling around South America.

His passion in life has always been seabird ecology closely followed by wildlife photography and the natural& human history of remote islands. This has led him to many remote areas worldwide. He has however a particular fascination for the Svalbard archipelago, The Faroes, Iceland and the Falklands but his in depth knowledge of the west coast of Scotland and remoter outliers is only equalled by a few.
His time is now divided between guide work and “fixing” which is really a term for organising and handling the logistical work for film crew or naturalists undertaking marine expeditions. On both large and small expedition ships he works as a naturalist, lecturer, mate and zodiac driver.
